This was new, but then the entire day had been rather different than their norm. For once they had just taken the time to enjoy each other, to play the part of normal not for a job, but for no other reason than because they wanted to. Before they had gotten inside everything today had been relaxed and unhurried, and Natasha was surprised not just how easily that had come to them, but how effortlessly they had returned to that now.
Smiling softly as he breathed her in, her fingers played softly along his thigh, making lazy patterns before just settling to rest there. Never before had she felt this safe with another person, this comfortable that she was able to let her guard down completely and relax entirely. There had been other men in her life but none who knew her like Clint, none who saw even the darkest parts of her and still loved her. From the very beginning he had placed trust in her that she hadn’t deserved and she had worked hard to earn it. He had seen something in her that nobody else ever had. He saw her not just as a weapon but as a woman, and even when she kept him at arm’s length he had worked tirelessly, slowly chipping away at her walls until they crumbled around her. It had taken her a long time to stop trying to rebuild them and just leave them down for him, only for him.
Wrapping her fingers around his hand, she brought it to her lips and kissed it softly before lowering them to rest on her chest, right above her heart. He had given her a choice, given her a new life, and then he had given her himself and everything he was. He had given her his body, his trust, his heart, his loyalty, and bit by bit she had done the same. She hoped he knew that, hoped he knew from her kiss, her smile, how she entrusted him with all that she was. She hoped he knew, but she also knew that sometimes that wasn’t enough. Sometimes people needed to hear it.
“I love you too, you know,” she said, voice barely more than a whisper over the soft strains of guitar and the heavy sounds of the storm raging outside.
